| What are the biological and geomorphological processes at work in developing environmental heterogeneity (e.g., salt marsh tidal creeks and sedge meadow tussocks) in wetlands? What is the most effective approach to restoring these features?
Our studies in the Tijuana Estuary of southern California explore options for tidal creek restoration: Should we excavate tidal creeks or let them form on their own in salt marsh sites? What geomorphic factors (such as vegetation cover, topographic gradient, grain size of soil surface) are important to consider when planning tidal creek restoration? In sedge meadow wetlands of southern Wisconsin, we have determined that Carex stricta tussocks support plant diversity. Most recently, we have begun to examine the physical structure of tussocks and the ecological characteristics of the sedge meadow community that resist invasion by reed canary grass. |
