Graduate Student Admissions and Support
The Department of Botany will consider, as candidates for advanced degrees, applicants who fulfill the entrance requirements for the Graduate School, as described in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Graduate School Catalog. The credentials of each candidate must be approved by the Department.
To ensure consideration of your application for both admission to the graduate program and financial support, we must receive it by January 2nd. Late applications may be reviewed until April 15th. All applicants are required to take the Graduate Record Examination. The subject GRE test (in Biology, or Cell and Molecular Biology), while not required, is highly recommended for students who wish to increase their chances of admission and for financial support. The Botany Dept. will use the subject test score, when available, as a criterion in making nominations for university fellowships and awarding teaching assistantships. Admission is based on the applicant's undergraduate record, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, previous research experience and shared interests with one or more potential faculty advisors.
Beginning in September 2005, the letter of recommendation will be online at the following URL: http://info.gradsch.wisc.edu/admin/admissions/elorinstructions.html
Applicants are required to use the Graduate School's online application form. The various documents that we require in addition to the application form are listed in the 'admissions check list' link below. Note: if applying to more than one department at UW, make sure you send application materials to each department.
