Defining Morphology: Floral Features: Flowers are zygomorphic, bisexual with 5-merous. Inflorescences are indeterminate, axillary, paniculate or solitary. Flower corolla with or without spur. The anterior petal is spurred. Ovaries are superior with parietal placentation. Fruit and Seed Features: Dicotyledon. Fruit mostly a capsule. Seeds are dispersed explosively. Vegetative Features: Habit as herbs to trees or lianas. Leaves alternate, simple (sometimes divided). Leaves margins are serrate. Stipulate is present.

Distribution: Cosmopolitan, mostly temperate areas. Woody taxa are mostly in lowland tropics.

Economic Use: As cultivated garden ornamentals.
