Defining Features: The family was divided into two subfamilies based on the characters of the leaf veins and fruits. The subfamily Cetiodeae is considered a new family, Celtideaceae and now Celtidaceae and Cannabinaceae form one family.

Defining Morphology: Floral Features: Flowers are actinomorphic, bisexual or unisexual with hypanthium. Plants monoecious, dioecious or polygamous. Flowers are very small, apetalous and borne in an inflorescence of determinate axillary clusters. Ovaries are superior with apical placentation. Fruit and Seed Features: Dicotyledon. Fruit is a nut, nutlet or samara. Seeds are flat with or without endosperm. Vegetative Features: Habit as trees or shrubs. Leaves are simple, alternate (rarely opposite), with oblique bases, strong serrate margins and prominent pinnate veins. Stipules are present, but deciduous.

Distribution: Widespread in north temperate, especially in Asia, except Pacific and Australia.

Economic Use: As a source of timber, as cultivated garden ornamentals and also used medicinally.
