Ovaries are superior with axile placentation. Fruit and Seed Features: Dicotyledon. Fruits usually a septicidal capsule or schizocarp. Vegetative Features: Habit varies from small shrubs to herbs, which are sometimes semi-parasitic. Leaves are alternate or opposite. Leaves have entire or toothed margins. Estipulate.

Distribution: Cosmopolitan, mainly north temperate.

Economic Use: As cultivated garden ornamentals.
