Defining Morphology: Floral Features: Inflorescences are various in heads, spikes or panicles. Flowers are actinomorphic and bisexual. Flowers are relatively large and sometimes with colored calyx and sometimes with an involucre bract. Calyx and corolla are often funnelform or tubular. Ovaries are superior with basal placentation. Fruit and Seed Features: Dicotyledon. Fruit as an achene or a type of capsule with persistent calyx. Seed has straight embryo and no perisperm. Endosperm present or absent. Vegetative Features: Habit as herbs, shrubs or vines. Leaves simple and alternate or basal. Leaves have broad base and short petiole. Stipules are lacking.

Distribution: Widely distributed, particularly in Eurasia.

Economic Use: As cultivated garden ornamentals and medicinal.
