Note: This multi-trunked plant has wide variety of flower colors, which appear before its leaves. Flowers are large, fragrant, and produce cone-like fruits that turn red at maturity. Saucer Magnolia has many different cultivars and is suitable as a specimen tree. This plant is very difficult to transplant. M. X soulangiana is a hybrid between M. denudata and M. liliiflora. The cross was done in the early 1800s by Chevalier Etienne Soulange-Bodin, Director of the French Royal Institute. Prefers sunny to partly shady, moist, well-drained, loamy, organic-rich soil.
