Note: F. sylvatica was brought to America in the mid-1700s. The color of this cultivar is a deep-purple to approaching black in the Spring and early Summer, but it may fade slightly as the season progresses. This tree is suitable for large lawns, or as street tree. Monitor plant for powdery mildew, aphids, canker, and beech bark disease. Prefers sunny to partly shady, moist, well-drained, organic-rich soil.
