Defining Morphology: Floral Features: Inflorescences are various and often in cyme and semi-paniculate. Perianth often bell-shaped or funnel-form. Flowers are bisexual and often zygomorphic. Flora nectaries are present. Ovaries are superior with axile placentation. Fruit and Seed Features: Monocotyledon. Fruit a capsule or berry. Seeds are ovoid and have endosperm. Vegetative Features: Habit as tuberous perennial herbs with basal aggregation of leaves. Leaves are alternate and simple with parallel venation. Leaves have entire margin.

Distribution: Eurasia to New Zealand and the Pacific, esp. Australia and Japan.

Economic Use: As garden and indoor ornamentals, or medicinally.
