Algae in Biotic Associations
Eat or be eaten, hide out in a cozy symbiotic relationship with someone bigger
than your predators, or find some way to defend yourself--these seem to be the
life choices for algae. In this chapter students will read about major
herbivores that prey on algae and pathogens that attack them, as well as
bacterial, fungal, and plant associates that may be beneficial. Algae-produced
toxins that probably function in defense, but are a growing global problem for
humans, are described here too. Students in aquatic ecology and microbiology
will appreciate this material.
