Phytoplankton Ecology
by James M. Graham
This chapter includes reviews of the physical and chemical environments of
phytoplankton, the major general characteristics of phytoplankton, and
phytoplankton population growth. The controversy surrounding "top-down versus
bottom-up" control of phytoplankton population dynamics is described because
it has influenced management approaches to controlling freshwater nuisance blooms.
Several tutorial, active-learning problem sets (with answers) are provided to
guide student understanding of how model equations can be applied to real data.
A text box on remote sensing of phytoplankton is included. This material will
be of interest to the limnologists, oceanographers, water chemists, and plankton
ecologists in the classroom.
