Ochrophytes IV: Chrysomeridaleans, Phaeothamniophyceans, Tribophyceans, and Phaeophyceans
Translate this title as "the familiar brown algae together with some smaller
groups thought to be closely related to them." Chapters 15, 16 (red algae),
17 (introduction to green algae and prasinophyceans), and 18 (ulvophyceans--
marine green seaweeds) are grouped for the convenience of instructors and
students of coastal regions who may wish to focus on marine seaweeds. This
chapter deals primarily with cell biology, growth, reproduction, relationships,
and diversity of brown algae. Ecology, physiology, and biogeography of
seaweeds are covered in Chapter 23.
