Rhodora 71: 94-103. see pp. 97-100 for chromosome counts: 33 individuals (15 in Warrior River population, 18 in Cahaba populations, all n = 32. However they reiterate that in Farmer’s 1962 study, he did obtain both meiotic and mitotic counts of n = 16 and 2n = 32, so they now feel that both chromosome numbers are present, but that n = 32 plants are more common.

Farmer, J. A. 1962. An ecological life history of Croton alabamensis E.A. Smith ex Chapman. 93 pp. Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Alabama. acc. to Webster 1969, Farmer reported Warrior River counts of n = 32 and Cahaba counts of n = 16. However the Farmer & Thomas 1969 study did counts from 18 individuals from Cahaba and all had n = 32.
