About Labs

H.  LABS and their importance to the class

Map of Birge Hall: Room 101 on the first floor is the Lab Room.

The Lab portion of the course is designed to reinforce the lectures and allow you to spend more time exploring the things I introduce for you in lecture but cannot discuss in detail.  The lab is open from 12-3 on Wednesday, and 10-4 on Thursday and Friday and is designed for you to come at any time.  One of the TAs or I will always be there to guide you and help you make the most of it.

Generally, you should plan to spend about one hour each week, but some weeks might take longer.  There are many demonstrations and displays for you to study and quite a few hands on activities for you to try.  Do try your hand at the activities, it really does help you understand the concepts I'm trying to bring across.  Lab is a lot of fun and the activities are designed to help you put what you are learning into practice.

Appendix II of the syllabus contains all the lab material you should bring to lab each week.  Consult the calendar for lab dates, since there are some weeks without lab.  Appendix II also includes a brief description of what each lab has to offer:   It is a study guide to everything you should be thinking about.  If you understand everything on the handout when you are done with lab, you will be set.
