Habitat:  Wooded, rocky ledge near top of N slope of large hill. Rich, relatively shallow soil over bedrock. Mature northern hardwood forest with scattered canopy openings left from selection-cutting perhaps 3 years previous. Earthworms present. Overstory of Acer saccharum and Tilia americana. Rubus strigosus and A. saccharum saplings common in the understory. Athyrium filix-femina, Dryopteris intermedia, Cinna latifolia, Polygonatum pubescens, Smilacina racemosa, Galeopsis tetrahit, Adiantum pedatum, and Aster macrophyllus common in the ground layer.
