Habitat:  Black spruce swamp (Picea mariana dominant, with Larix laricina); assoc.: Chamaedaphne calyculata, Eriophorum spissum, E. virginicum, Gaultheria hispidula, Ledum groenlandicum, Vaccinium oxycoccos. Undisturbed; canopy closure relatively high (more than 50%). Mature trees 8--12 m tall, 1--5 in. dbh. Saturated substrate of sphagnum mosses, moss hummocks 0.2--0.4 m high.
