Habitat:  On dry hillsides or banks; trees mostly Pinus echinata and oaks, including Quercus marilandica; other plants noted same area; Phlox pilosa, Oxalis violacea; Ceanothus americanus; Heuchera americana; Claytonia virginica.
 
Text:  Bright deep red flowered caryophyll; stem (especially upper stem) and calices covered with sticky stalked glands; scatted but not uncommon.
