Habitat:  Growing along the fringe of a swamp with partial sun and moist soil. Canopy consists of mostly Picea mariana, Larix laricina, Prunus serotina, Abies balsamea, Acer rubrum, and Betula papyrifera with very few Quercus bicolor and Quercus macrocarpa. The groundcover consits of Pteridium aquilinum, Cornus canadensis, pedicularis lanceolata, Vaccinium angustifolium, and Sphagnum spp.
